Adding Lead Tape to Your Paddle

Written by Sara McInnes | Jul 23, 2024 10:28:49 AM

These days, pickleball is almost as much about equipment as it is about skill. While choosing the right paddle is crucial - not to mention a really fun process to go through - many players overlook the potential for customisation and optimisation.

Although we cannot modify the paddle to have more grit nor can we customize the design (ex. place stickers on the paddle face), one method that has gained popularity among enthusiasts and pros is adding lead tape to a paddle edgeguard.

Let’s explore some of the benefits, considerations, and techniques of enhancing your pickleball paddle with lead tape...

Lead tape is a malleable and adhesive material that allows players to adjust the weight and balance of their pickleball paddles.

It can be purchased in various widths of thin strips and it can be easily fine-tuned to enhance paddle performance according to individual preferences, whether that be more power, control, or stability.

Some Benefits of Adding Lead Tape:

Customised Weight Distribution

By strategically placing lead tape on specific areas of the paddle (either higher or lower on the paddle), players can alter its weight distribution to suit their playing style.

Adding weight to the head of the paddle can increase power and momentum in shots, while redistributing weight towards the handle can enhance maneuverability and control.

Improved Stability and Control

A well-balanced paddle is essential for consistent and accurate shot-making but with so many different types of paddles on the market, each paddle has a different weight distribution.

Because pickleball paddles are fairly light and smaller in comparison to tennis racquets, paddles can often feel handle-heavy, as the density of the handle is higher than a paddle face.

Lead tape can actually allow you to finely tune the balance of your paddles so that even a heavy-weight paddle can feel like a midweight paddle.

Adding lead tape can also reduce some of the vibration as the ball hits the paddle face, which will improve the feeling of stability. All of this will translate to better control over the ball trajectory and placement on the court.

Enhanced Power and Speed

Increasing the overall weight of the paddle with lead tape will add more force behind shots, resulting in greater power and speed.

This is particularly beneficial for players who want to add more power and pace to their game, without having to bulk up and hit the gym.

The areas you will notice additional power will be in the serve, overhead smash, punch volleys, and groundstrokes. You should notice that you can put in less effort to achieve more power.

Personalised Performance

Every player has unique preferences and playing styles. With lead tape, individuals can tailor their paddles to meet their specific needs and preferences.

Whether you're a defensive player looking for better defense at the net or an aggressive player seeking more firepower from the baseline, lead tape allows for personalized performance optimisation.

Before applying lead tape to your pickleball paddle, consider the following factors:

Regulations and Restrictions

Check the USAP Rulebook (2.E.5) regarding paddle modifications. While lead tape is acceptable it’s always good to be informed as to what constitutes a legal or illegal paddle (particularly, for tournament play).

Experimentation and Adjustment

Adding lead tape is definitely a trial-and-error process so be patient as you play around with it. Start with small increments of weight and experiment with different placements to find the optimal configuration for your paddle.

Be prepared to make adjustments based on feedback from your playing experience and don’t be quick to make changes either, unless you get a strong and immediate sense that it doesn’t feel right.

Paddle Construction

Consider the material and construction of your paddle before applying lead tape. Some paddles may be better suited for customization than others.

For example, you’ll have a harder time applying tape to thinner and edgeless paddles versus the thicker paddles with a heavier edgeguard.

Skill Level and Playing Style

Your skill level and playing style should influence your decision to add lead tape to your paddle.

Novice players may benefit from a more forgiving and lightweight paddle, while advanced players may appreciate the added control and power afforded by lead tape customisation.

If you’re newer to pickleball or are not experienced in racquet sports, then it will likely take some time before you start to consider adding lead tape.

Application Techniques

Applying lead tape to your pickleball paddle requires careful attention to detail and precision. Here's a step-by-step guide to help you get started:

  1. Clean the surface of your paddle with a microfibre cloth to remove any dirt, oil, or debris. Ensure that the surface is dry before proceeding.

  2. Measure and cut the lead tape into strips of desired length using scissors or a utility knife. Shape the strips to fit the contours of your paddle, if necessary.

  3. Peel off the backing from the lead tape to expose the adhesive side. Carefully apply the tape to the desired areas of the paddle, pressing firmly to ensure proper adhesion.

  4. Once the lead tape is applied you can use a roller or flat object to smooth out any air bubbles and ensure uniform contact with the paddle surface. Press down firmly to secure the tape in place. Many players also add electrical tape on top of the lead tape to hide it.

  5. Head to the court and test its performance in various game situations. Pay attention to any changes in feel, balance, and shot outcomes. Be sure to take wind and the type of ball you’re using into consideration too. Then feel free to make adjustments as needed by adding or removing lead tape until you achieve the desired performance.

Adding Tape to the Throat

Adds stability

Changes weight distribution

Adds a bit of power and slightly improves the sweet spot

Adding Tape to the Sides

  1. Adding tape to the sides will add some power but may reduce the hand speed
  2. It will absolutely change the stability of your paddle
  3. Should increase the size of the sweet spot

Adding Tape to the Top

  1. This is a slightly less popular place to put the tape because it will really only add power not stability/control as well
  2. It may slow decrease hand speed
